THE VIDEO LINK BACK to Langley ended. Maggie stood fixed as though hypnotised by the grey static on the LCD. Andrew stepped up behind her. He placed a hand on her shoulder. Maggie shrugged him away and turned slowly to face us all. “Well. Isn’t this a fine piece of shit we’re in now?” Without another word, Maggie turned and disappeared from the ops room.

I got up from my chair. Andrew raised a hand, gesturing for me to remain seated. “Give her a moment, Angel. It’s been a bugger of a day.”

In the same breath, Andrew asked Christina if she could get the Keyhole Satellite Three up and running. Christina nodded vigorously and made for the keyboard.

Bosco got up from his chair and made for the door. “You can have this shit. I’m done with it!”

The next to leave was Xe, following Bosco without saying a word.

“Sohn einer hundin!” Christina yelled as she thumped the tabletop with the heel of a closed fist. But after a pause, she went back to typing out strings of commands. Her fingers moved so fast, they became a blur of movement until finally, she sat back clearly delighted with her accomplishment. “It vill be up soon. I promise it.”

We waited, not moving, eyes fixed on the screen. The screen flickered into an image above the area of Nurrungar.

“Danke Gott!” Christina clapped her hands and blew a kiss to her computer.

Andrew leaned in and inspected the scenery. He pointed to a section of land that had his interest. “Move the camera there, Christina.”

Christina went to work on the keyboard. The camera zoomed down. After a few minutes we realised we were looking in the wrong location.

“Take us back up,” Andrew said. “We might get a better view.”

Christina tapped keys, and the camera responded, lifting up higher.

I fought the urge for a cigarette, as I viewed what was going on at the computer. But something caught my attention. As I moved in closer to the computer screen, I noticed an area that didn’t seem quite right. I leaned forward and trained my eyes while looking over Christina’s shoulder.

Andrew came in closer and I felt his presence up behind me. I could feel his breath on my neck as he spoke softly about the situation. Oddly enough, knowing full well the state of affairs we had on our hands, all I wanted to do was push back toward him. My head ran away for a second. There was work to be done, but something else had surprised me. It was all about Andrew’s magnetism. How I wanted him, and I was sure, Andrew knew it.

Dragging my head back, I forced myself to re-focus. My eyes went back to the one thing that looked out of place. Another outbuilding, but the colour was all wrong. What I’d seen was much darker than the others areas. “There. Move the camera down on that spot,” I asked Christina.

A few taps on the keyboard and Christina had the camera zoomed down. It was horrible to see what had happened to the hangar.
